UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH PONTIANAK (UM PONTIANAK) is one of 178 Muhammadiyah Universities in Indonesia. The establishment was initiated by the West Kalimantan Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership for the period 1985 – 1990, and then the establishment was formalized by the Central Leadership of the Muhammadiyah Association represented by the Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Higher Education Council Drs. Djazman Al-Kindi on October 3, 1990. UM Pontianak was given permission to establish in accordance with the Decree (SK) from the Department of Education and Culture Number: 0518/O/1990 with registered status for 3 (three) faculties, namely: Faculty of Economics, Department of Management, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Aquaculture, and Faculty of Engineering Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Now, UM Pontianak has seven faculties with 16 study programs.

Initial establishment

  • 1990 - 1991

At the beginning of its establishment (1990 – 1991) administrative and lecture activities were carried out at the Muhammadiyah College Complex (Muhammadiyah High School building) Jalan A. Yani Pontianak. Then, at the end of 1991, UM Pontianak bought a sports hall located on Jalan A. Yani No. 111 Pontianak, adjacent to the Provincial Election Commission (KPU) Building and the West Kalimantan Governor's Office, so that at the end of the same year all administrative and lecture activities were carried out in that building after renovations were carried out.

Establishment of the Faculty of Tarbiyah and Agriculture

  • 1991

In 1991, UM Pontianak established the Tarbiyah Faculty, Islamic Religious Education Department and the Agriculture Faculty, Aquaculture Department, in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Religion Number: 125 of 1991 dated July 12 1991.

Change of Faculty name

  • 1996

Then in 1996. In accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia Number 499 of 1996, the Tarbiyah Faculty (FAI) changed its name to the Faculty of Islamic Religion, then in the same year the Faculty of Agriculture changed to the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences.

Diploma II Program (PGTKI)

  • 2002

In 2002, FAI established the Diploma II Program in Islamic Kindergarten Teacher Education (PGTKI) in accordance with the Decree of the Kopertais Region XI Kalimantan Coordinator Number: C/II/07/2002.

Establishment of the Faculty of Health

  • 2003

In 2003, UM Pontianak established a Faculty of Health with a Public Health Science Study Program in accordance with the letter from the Ministry of National Education, Director General of Higher Education Number 1621/D/T/2003 dated July 31 2003.

Diploma II Program in Early Childhood Education

  • 2006

The Diploma II Program in Islamic Kindergarten Teacher Education (PGTKI)  closed in 2006 because UM Pontianak established the Diploma II Program in Early Childhood Education.

Establishment of FKIP

  • 2007

In 2007, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) was established because 2 (two) proposed study programs were given operational permits based on Decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI) No. 2929/D/T/ 2007, namely the Early Childhood Education (PAUD) Study Program and Chemistry Education, both for undergraduate level (S1).
